I worked at the Flying Carpet through High School and most of College. The par 3 golf course was flat and tiny, but still fun, especially ubder the lights. ChiChi Rodriguez was a phenom at the time in the PGA. He played the whole course with his putter, laughing all the way. The Western Open was in town, and even Arnold Palmer came by. The minaret was a clever decoration of the chimney of the old greenhouse that had been on the property. It was cheaper to decorate it than to demolish it! The space-age forms on the left above surrounded the food service facilities - dining room on the first floor, banquet halls above, indoor pool in the basement. Miniatuere gold during the summer was replaced by a refrigerated ice rink from October - April.
ReplyDeleteI played hockey on the rink in the winter

It bacame the Grand Plaza when the Flying Carpet closed. It was run by a Greek named Simon. I used to go swimming in the outddor pool. I remember a bartender named Mel who operated a drink tent near the pool.
ReplyDeleteMy mother worked at this motel as a switchboard operator back in the early 70's I think. I remember the outdoor pool and those "cabanas" along the side. Love these images, thank you so much for sharing!
