  1. The world-famous Mexican writer, Alfonso Reyes stayed at this hotel for one night in May of 1941. He was on his way (along with his son and his driver) from Mexico City to UC Berkley where he was invited to receive an honorary degree. He relates these events in a piece titled "Berkeleyana" on Volume XXIV of his complete works.
