The Golden Gate Hotel, Miami Beach, Florida.
Designed to follow the sun and ocean breezes, it is truly an architectural masterpiece. View shows the private balconies and one the three pools. The Golden Gate development is the largest of its kind in Florida.

  1. For a child - and evidently for the adults, too - the Golden Gate was a glorious place which these photos don't do justice. We went there for Easter vacation with another family when I was three, four and five. We stayed on the "motel" side, west of A1A and near the good Howard Johnson's Restaurant; there was a wonderful tunnel we could walk through under the highway, to the beach... the Inland Waterway came up to the "motel" side, with fishing and other small boats and yachts. Everything seemed human-scale, clean and tropical, an adventure somehow touched with magic...

  2. I remember going to the Golden Gate Bayside / Motel every summer from early 60's to Mid-70's. I even stayed when it was sold to Sheraton and became the Sheraton Beach. I remember being thee during the 1968 Republican convention. The Oklahoma and Nevada Delegations were housed there. I even remember then Governor Ronald Reagan was there to speak to the delegations housed there. My mother was ill at that time and had a severe ear ache. She just stayed at our room's outside looking at the bay. A man saw her. She looked as ill as she was. He asked what was wrong. The man had a southern / Midwestern drawl . She talked about her ear and aches and pains. The man left and got into a boat . Hours later while we were preparing to go to dinner, we had the TV on. It was the Republican convention. My Mom saw him on TV. He was the Governor of Oklahoma!

  3. My family spent Christmas vacation there from 1956 to 1963. My birthday is December 27th and I used to have my birthday dinners in the hotel dining room. I too remember the tunnel to get to the motel side.when I was old enough to go by myself. Loved swimming in the pool on the ocean side.
